Start with the fixture and application—then size the system

Landscape lighting should begin with the job: uplighting, pathway visibility, wall grazing, step lighting, deck lighting, or hardscape accents. Select the fixture type and beam effect before choosing bulbs, transformer capacity, cable, and controls.

Spotlights and uplights

Use adjustable spotlights to emphasize trees, columns, walls, and architectural features. Compare beam spread, fixture finish, bulb format, mounting method, and whether a compatible bulb is included or sold separately.

Path and area lights

Path fixtures distribute light closer to the ground for walkways, beds, and transitions. Fixture spacing depends on the optical pattern and site; closer is not always better.

Well, deck, step, and hardscape fixtures

Choose these by installation location, direction of light, physical protection, drainage or mounting requirements, and compatible lamp or integrated-light specifications.

Transformer and load planning

Add the actual fixture wattage, allow appropriate capacity, and account for cable length and voltage drop. Transformer size should follow the final system design rather than the number of fixtures alone.

Which landscape fixture should I use for uplighting?

An adjustable spotlight or suitable well light is commonly used to direct light upward. Choose between them based on the mounting location, desired beam, drainage/site conditions, and fixture specifications.

Do landscape fixtures include the bulb?

Some fixtures have an integrated light source or include a lamp; others require a compatible MR16, G4, PAR36, or other bulb sold separately. The product page should state the package contents and compatibility.

How large should my landscape transformer be?

Calculate the actual connected wattage and design the circuit and cable runs before selecting a transformer. Include appropriate capacity and account for voltage drop instead of sizing from fixture count alone.
